Editing for Journal Articles

Speed up the acceptance process with polished word choice, formatted references, and suggestions for large-scale revisions, including trimming your article to meet the word count.

Details:

Copyediting and proofreading for journal articles.

We work with professors (especially prolific publishers!) as well as grad students, plus a couple of journals.

The service is à la carte, so when you book our services, you’ll tell us what you need help with:

  • clarity and readability,
  • grammar,
  • shortening the word count,
  • fixing the overall logic,
  • MLA, APA, or Chicago styles, or
  • specific feedback from reviewers.
Our editing slots tend to fill up several weeks in advance. Sometimes we do have last-minute cancellations, but generally, we recommend booking a month in advance. We periodically update our availability on our Instagram and Facebook pages.

We charge different prices based on the type of editing that you need.

For proofreading (basic grammar check): $0.025/word

For copyediting (editing for word choice and clarity): $0.035/word

For developmental editing (providing big-picture feedback): $0.045/word

For formatting: $2/reference list entry or footnote; $10/table; $40 for formatting the headings and pagination.

For page formatting: $100 for formatting the body and front matter of your dissertation. Ask for a quote if your project is smaller than a dissertation.

If you’re a student paying for your own editing, you get a 20% discount because being a student is hard.

You can find more details about the cost on the pricing page.

For simplicity, many writers choose to pay out of pocket using their credit cards via Square. Some ask for reimbursement from their departments later.

We’re approved vendors at several universities, and the process to become an approved vendor at your university is likely to be relatively simple, too.

That means that the universities pay us directly: Some pay using department credit cards; still others ask their universities to send us a check. Ask your procurements department or your department’s administrative assistant (AKA the one who knows everything; every department has this person).

We usually return journal articles within one week.

We may be able to help you, if we can find some extra childcare! If you need your paper edited more quickly than is typical (see “When should I expect my paper back?”), please specify your deadline in your contact form. Rush editing is a 30% up-charte.

Note that we charge rush editing rates if our schedule is full and your paper requires us to work overtime. Booking ahead can solve that problem, though we understand that advance notice isn’t always possible.

If you’d like to talk through the overall logic of your paper, ideas for cutting your paper down, or ways to respond to reviewers’ comments, a Zoom session might be ideal.

If you’d like more one-on-one help from me, please check out my Live Sessions. Or, book an appointment with your university writing center. Writing tutors are trained to help you for free! They’re even happy to help professors.
